National Lawyers Guild-Detroit

The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) is a vibrant and diverse organization of lawyers, legal workers, law students, and jailhouse lawyers that has been using law for the people since its establishment in 1937. The NLG's mission is to unite the legal community in the service of the people by valuing human rights and the rights of ecosystems over property interests. As an effective force in the service of the people, the NLG functions to promote social justice and human rights, empower communities, and strive for a more just society.

What We Do

Legal Observer Program

The Legal Observer (LO) program is one of the cornerstones of the NLG's work. At the request of social justice and activist groups, Legal Observers attend public demonstrations to monitor law enforcement activity and ensure that the rights of protesters are protected. The LO program is active in many cities across the United States and has played a critical role in defending the rights of protesters in various mass demonstrations over the years.

Defense of Black Lives Matter Protesters

The NLG has been at the forefront of defending the rights of protesters involved in the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. The NLG has provided legal support and representation to hundreds of BLM protesters who have been arrested and charged with various offenses during demonstrations. The NLG's Defense of BLM Protesters initiative aims to protect the First Amendment rights of protesters, prevent the use of excessive force by law enforcement, and hold law enforcement accountable for violations of protesters' rights.

Civil Rights Litigation

The NLG engages in civil rights litigation aimed at challenging systemic injustices, promoting police accountability, and protecting the rights of marginalized communities. Through its Civil Rights Litigation program, the NLG brings lawsuits against government entities, law enforcement agencies, and other actors that violate the rights of individuals.
