Fairness, Transparency, and Accountability in Attorney Regulation
The Michigan Attorney Discipline Board (ADB) is the adjudicative arm of the Michigan Supreme Court, responsible for discharging its exclusive constitutional responsibility to supervise and discipline Michigan attorneys. The ADB is committed to upholding the highest standards of professional conduct and ensuring that Michigan attorneys adhere to the Rules of Professional Conduct and the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct.
Our Services
At the ADB, we provide a range of services designed to promote attorney accountability and maintain the integrity of the legal profession. Some of the key services we offer include:
Attorney Disciplinary Proceedings
We conduct trials and hearings to investigate allegations of professional misconduct by Michigan attorneys. Our hearing panels, composed of volunteer attorneys, review evidence and hear testimony from witnesses to determine whether an attorney has violated the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct. Based on the findings of our hearings, we may impose disciplinary sanctions, including reprimands, suspensions, and disbarment.
Complaint Processing
We receive and process complaints from the public, law enforcement agencies, and other sources alleging attorney misconduct. Our staff reviews each complaint to determine whether it meets our criteria for investigation and, if so, conducts an investigation to determine whether alleged misconduct occurred.
Disciplinary Actions
We take disciplinary action against attorneys who have engaged in professional misconduct. Our sanctions can include reprimands, suspension, and disbarment, and we work closely with the Attorney Grievance Commission to monitor attorney conduct and take action as necessary.
Hearing Panel Members
We appoint volunteer attorneys to serve on hearing panels to investigate complaints and conduct disciplinary proceedings. These hearing panels are composed of three volunteer attorneys, including at least one member of the State Bar of Michigan.
Public Access
We provide public access to information about disciplinary actions taken against Michigan attorneys, including notations of discipline, suspension, and disbarment. We also maintain a database of attorney disciplinary history and provide information on attorney discipline to the public.
Career Opportunities
We offer career opportunities in various areas of the ADB, including attorney, investigator, and support staff positions. If you are interested in a career with the ADB, please visit our website to learn more about our available positions and application process.
