Protecting our Community, Upholding Victims' Rights
The 38th Judicial District Attorney's Office is dedicated to serving the community in Real and Uvalde Counties. As the chief law enforcement officer in the district, our office is committed to protecting the community by working closely with citizens and members of law enforcement. Our mission is to provide a safe community where citizens can live, work, and raise their families without fear of crime.
Victim Services
Our office takes seriously the plight of victims of crime and is committed to providing them with the necessary support and resources to navigate the criminal justice system. As the Crime Victim's Coordinator, we are dedicated to assisting victims of crime and upholding their rights as given by the Texas Constitution and statutes. Our office provides a range of services to meet the material, emotional, and informational needs of victims and witnesses, including general information about the criminal justice system, court accompaniment, notification of case status, referral to social service agencies, and aid in preparing applications for the Crime Victim Compensation fund.
Legal Information
Our office is responsible for prosecuting all adult felonies in the 38th Judicial District. We also provide legal information and resources to the public, including information on the grand jury, indictment, and arraignment processes. A grand jury is an impartial panel of citizens who investigate alleged crimes, examine evidence, and issue indictments if they believe that there is enough evidence for a trial to proceed. An indictment is a formal accusation of a felony issued by a grand jury after considering evidence presented by a prosecutor. An arraignment is the initial appearance before a judge in a criminal case, where the charges against the defendant are read, a lawyer is appointed if the defendant cannot afford one, and the defendant's plea is entered.
Additional Resources
We recognize the importance of providing additional resources to victims of crime. Our office works closely with local agencies and organizations to provide support and services to those affected by crime. We also provide information on various resources available to victims, including the Texas Department of Human Services Abuse Hotline, the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and the Texas VINE toll-free number.
